CSA Work Day

Ty, our youngest farm volunteer enjoyed being a Farmer for the Day

Today was our end of season CSA work day for members who could donate a couple of hours to help clean out the garden.  When you think about farm work, it’s easy to forget about the cleanup that needs to be done at the end of the year. Members were hard at work digging up flowers and plants and carting off the brush for pickup.

Scoop from the Coop Kevin made a new door for the chicken coop on his day off this week. Egg production has slowed down a little which is likely attributed both to the shorter days and the fact that the girls are over a year old now.

On the Table: Calico Beans

ingredients

1/2-1lb ground beef or turkey, browned and drained

1/2 lb bacon cooked & crumbled (to save time, I buy all natural bacon “bits”)

1 large onion chopped

1/2 cup ketchup

2 tsp. salt

2 tsp. mustard

4  tsp. vinegar

1/2 box brown sugar

1 (30 oz) can baked beans with liquid

1 (15 oz) can garbanzo beans (drained & rinsed)

1 (15 oz) can red kidney beans (drained & rinsed)

1 (10 pkg.) frozen baby lima beans

Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker and cook all day on low or 4-5 hours on high.  Serves 4. Great with cornbread! This dish is a lot like chili but sweet instead spicy. Perfect for a cool fall day and can easily be doubled for a crowd.
